Ensuring that disability is not a barrier to experiencing the joy of sailing

Poole Sailability Boats

We have four Hawk 20 dayboats, named Nadia, Blue Dolphin, Valentine and Twin Sails. The Hawks are designed to have great stability and to be simple and forgiving to sail and so are ideal for beginners. The Hawks are equipped with outboard engines to ensure we can get on and off the pontoons and for extra comfort they also have cushions on the seats!

The Hawks are very good for people with reduced mobility and we can help you to get on and off the boat. Each boat trip will have an experienced skipper, and a no2 crew member who will encourage the disabled crew to take an active part in sailing the boat if they wish. The boats can by sailed by two people but can take up to five people. Sailing members are supplied with lifejackets and we have waterproof jackets if they are needed.

The boats are fast and fun to sail, and so are suitable for the more adventurous sailors as they progress and learn. The Hawks can all be fitted with spinnakers(sails for when the wind is coming from behind) for improving speed when sailing in light winds.

Whenever our boats are on the water they are accompanied by our state of the art safety boat “Barbican” bought in 2023. This has a powerful engine and a floating drop ramp at the bow which can be quickly deployed by the duty officer in the very unlikely event of someone falling into the water. This makes a recovery safe and easier to do. Barbican has a VHF radio, and can communicate with our boat skippers, and local support services if needed.
